The Referee

He may be a son, a father or brother, sometimes that 'he' can be a mother.

He may be a plumber, a bricky or spark, but always the master, when out on the park.

He's got to be wise, courageous, a wit, without these three virtues, he's well in the mess.

He may be tall, short, hairy or bald, but there isn't a name he hasn't been called.

He plays every game straight from the heart, but to those on the line, he's not worth a fart.

He knows all the laws inside and out, but to some players, this is always in doubt.

He's as fit as a fiddle, runs around all day, but he never ever keeps up with play.

He has keen eyesight, sharp as a rat, miss an offside, and he's blind as a bat.

He'll red card some forward who thinks he's a wag, for telling the linesman what to do with his flag.

He'll stop the full back from pulling a flanker, that's when he's told he looks like a banker.

He'll have a bad game, the ones that we dread, then he finds out his parents weren't wed.

He'll caution a player who calls him a louse, asks for his name, another Mickey Mouse.

Jim Smith will call, schoolboys need thee, he'll heed to the call then waive the fee.

He'll inspect the pitch all covered in ice, call off the game, the remarks are not nice.

He'll send a man off. Oh! Hear the squeals, then down to the county for the phoney appeals.

He's packing it in, because of the fights, but changed his mind, after a few large whites.

He takes the brickbats, moans and screams, that come from players of all sorts of teams.

The fixtures are late, it sure is a riddle, here comes the postie, it's a cup final middle.

He may be Greek, Irish, a Jew or a gent, but he will always give one hundred per cent.

Jack Blakemore to carry Olympic Torch

Wirral RA (c) 61
Wirral RA are delighted to hear that Jack Blakemore has been selected as one of the lucky few who will carry the official London 2012 Olympic Torch during its’ relay around the UK.

Jack has been selected from tens of thousands of applicants and has recently been informed that he has been confirmed that he carry the torch during its relay through Southport on 1st June.

Those shortlisted were put forward to selection panels across the UK, who judged each story anonymously. With such a high standard the decisions as who would be one of the 8000 successful applicants was extremely difficult.

Pasted Graphic 1

The Torch was designed by east Londoners Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, who won the opportunity through a competitive tender run by the London 2012 Organising Committee and the Design Council.

Basildon-based product engineers Tecosim, Birmingham-based LPG Gas specialists and manufacturers, Bullfinch and Coventry manufacturers Premier Sheet Metal have taken the design and moved it into mass production.

The Torch is made up of an inner and an outer aluminium alloy skin, held in place by a cast top piece and base, perforated by 8,000 circles.

Representing the inspirational stories of the 8,000 Torchbearers who will carry the Olympic Flame, the circles which run the length of the body of the Torch also offer a unique level of transparency.

You can see right to the heart of the Torch and view the burner system which will keep the Olympic Flame alive on its journey around the UK.

The circles also help ensure heat is quickly dissipated, without being conducted down the handle, and providing extra grip.

The Torch stands 800mm high.

The Torch is being tested in BMW’s climatic testing facility in Munich to make sure it can withstand all weather conditions. BMW is a Supporting Partner of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.

The triangular-shaped Torch was inspired by a series of 'threes' that are found in the history of the Olympic Games and the vision for the Olympic Movement:
  • The three words that make the Olympic motto – faster, higher, stronger;
  • The fact that the UK has hosted the Olympic Games in 1908, 1948 and will host them for the third time in 2012; and
  • The vision for the London 2012 Olympic Games to combine three bodies of work – sport, education and culture.
More than half of the London 2012 Torchbearers are expected to be young people aged as young as 12, so the designers aimed to make the Torch as light as possible.

It is made from a special aluminium alloy developed for the aerospace and automotive industry. The alloy is lightweight but strong, with excellent heat resistance. The 8,000 circles also reduce the weight of the final design, whilst ensuring strength isn’t compromised.

The Torch weighs 800 grams.

The gold colour embraces the qualities of the Olympic Flame – the brightness and the warmth of the light that it shines.
