Unlikely Call-Up For Wirral Official
29/09/08 11:14
During last weeks game between Burnley v Fulham in
the Carling Cup 3rd Round Wirral Select Group
Assistant John Stokes was running the line. Pete
Gibbons went along as his guest. As Pete was about to
enjoy the half time hospitality a phone call from
John cut this short as John had picked up a Calf
Strain during the first half and as a result was
coming off. The appointed 4th Official was going on
the line meaning a replacement 4th Official was
needed. Pete was asked by referee Mike Jones to
become the replacement for the second half and
quickly changed into a spare kit ready to go.
Not the first time that this has happened - Some of you might remember Steve Brand doing the same during the 2000 League Cup Final when Alan Wilkie, the match referee went down injured during the second half. Steve took over dressed for occasion in his white jeans !
